Should You Consider Buying a
Home in the Current Market?

By Deanna Sletten
The current real estate market is definitely a buyer's market. With the high availability of homes on the market and interest rates at historical lows, this is an opportune time for buyers to purchase the home of their dreams at an affordable monthly payment.

If you have been saving to purchase a first home and have a good credit score and very little debt, then this is the perfect time for you to buy a home. Not only will you have a variety of homes to choose... Read More
Moving House Made Easy
By John Rooney
Trash Your Stash - Moving unwanted items into your new home will not only increase the amount of effort you put into packing and unpacking, it will also add to the overall time involved in your move. Begin by clearing out the loft, garage and cellar to get rid of anything that you haven't used in at least the last twelve months. You can sell your items in a garage sale, or on Craigslist or eBay. Breathe New Life into Inherited Furniture
By ARA

Inherited furniture can be a blessing or a burden. How do you decide if inherited furnishings have "good bones" and are worth revitalizing with fresh fabrics and custom details? The design mavens at Calico Corners offer the following advice:

First consider whether you really like the piece. Is it comfortable? And is there a place for it in your home?

Reupholstery is major surgery for furniture. Springs are replaced and retied. Fillings and foam are renewed. The frame is reinforced if needed. In short, you'll practically have a new piece of furniture when the upholsterer is finished.

Whether you are designing a new piece or redoing an older one, custom details can make all the difference. It's easy to find great fabrics—Calico Corners offers more than 3,000 choices—to create a great new look for an inherited or antique piece of furniture.

Ingredients for Green Cleaning
By Kari Livingston
Environmentally friendly cleaning products are readily available at a variety of retail stores, but it is also easy to make your own "green" household products. Your entire house can be fresh, clean and germ free by using just four readily available household ingredients: water, white vinegar, baking soda and Castile soap. When making up your own cleaning solutions, it is helpful to keep a supply of clean spray bottles on hand. Make sure that you clearly label each solution bottle.

Baking soda, one of the most effective household scrubbers available at any cost, dissolves in water and has some anti fungal properties. Although it is not quite as abrasive as more costly scrubs that contain chlorine, you don't have to worry about fumes or potentially harmful chemical reactions or skin irritations. Baking soda is also safe for drain pipes and for the ground water supply.

Vinegar is a natural antibacterial and anti fungal cleanser that can be used as a drain and sink deodorizer... Read More
Gorgeous Garden Perennials
By J. A. Young
Choosing plants for the garden and patio can be a daunting task given the wide range of beautiful plants that are available. The following perennials, however, are worth considering for a special focal point of the landscape.

Autumn joy sedum offers lovely deep pink tufted blooms for the garden. Full sunlight and a well-draining soil are two requirements for this plant. Because they can thrive in less-than-ideal conditions, they are a hardy perennial that is easy to care for.

Beebalm is a distinctive ornamental plant with gorgeous flowers. Although it can be an aggressive spreader, when held at bay it will add beauty to any setting. This perennial prefers moist soil and plenty of sunlight... Read More
